الحجر الحلو SWEET STONES | 2021
Five Jerusalem lime stones and their five brass replicas
Size varies from 25 - 40 cm diameter
Five stones are taken from the site of the video work Theos and replicated in brass.
The stones, neither big nor small, function in the video as a signifier of a division,
an obstacle rather than a border.
The title Sweet Stones الحجر الحل derives from the Palestinian term for what is commonly known as Jerusalem stone.
The ascribed sweetness is believed to relate to the soft nature of the material: it is easy and hence “sweet” to work with. In line with Pereg’s documentary approach,
duplicating the stones functions as a means to create an archive, preserving the real.
In the case of these Jerusalemite “sweet stones,' the real stones' fragility undermines their actual function as obstacles, presenting them as ceremonial objects, using brass to
reinforce their new, artificial, preciousness.
The matching couples are engraved in Arabic handwriting with the word الحجر (“stone”) on the real stone, and الحل (“sweet”) on its brass replica.
